Tutorial: Blue Stained Glass Nail Art

Stain Glass Blue Nail Art

After the whirlwind of Easter Nail Art, I was in search of my next nail design. After going through my plates at least 3 times, one pattern finally stood out to me. The only thing left was to decide on was the colours. I chopped and changed the colours a few times until I was happy. Eventually, I settled on a blue theme to create a blue stained glass nail art design. The design process took a full day but I was glad I stuck with it, as this ended up becoming one of my favourite designs this year.

The Base

I started with China Glaze – Flyin’ High on each nail except for the ring finger. I chose Flyin’ High for the base as it was the lightest of the blues I had selected and would allow each colour to be seen clearly.

ILNP, Deep End was used to create an accent nail. I completely forgot to apply a coloured base coat so it took about four coats for Deep End to become opaque.

Reverse Stamping

The next stage of this design was the reverse stamping using maniology plate BM-203. I started with stamping the square pattern onto my stamping mat using black stamping polish so that the lines would stand out from the dark blues. I then moved onto filling in the gaps. My only rule was that the same colour couldn’t be in the adjoining square. Other than that I was free to place the colours where ever I wished. To make this easier I made each image the same. After allowing each to dry I applied a layer of clear polish to the design.

The colours I used for filling in the gaps were:

  • ILNP – Blueprint
  • China Glaze – Frostbite
  • China Glaze -Aqua Baby
  • China Glaze -Adore

Once each image had dried, I gently lifted each design and placed it on my nail. I decided to use nail scissors to trim the outer edges of each decal before using nail polish remover to clean up the remaining overhang.

The only thing remaining was to apply a final clear coat to the top to protect the design.

Overall

This blue stained glass nail art design is super easy to create and I feel it looks great. Let me know if you would attempt a design like this? What colours would you use?
