Anzac Day – Lest we forget

Anzac Day – 2018

So this is going to be a quick post but I thought I would share some thoughts about Anzac Day with you. For those who don’t know, ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corp. ANZAC Day was started initially to commemorate those in WW1. However, it has since been extended to other wars including WWII, Vietnam and Iraq. It recognises the contribution that was made by those in service. Many rise early for dawn services. Personally, I have never been to a dawn service, although I would like to attend one at some stage.

More information about ANZAC Day can be found here: https://www.awm.gov.au/commemoration/anzac-day/traditions

Generally, I prefer to reflect on the day by baking ANZAC biscuits. I haven’t been able to do this for the last two years due to my university studies. However, now that my studies are finished I can get back into baking. Although the ANZAC biscuits we know and love today are not directly related to the WW1 as commonly thought they are quite often consumed on the day (or as soon as they have cooled down). The biscuit that was consumed in WW1 was a hardtack biscuit: https://www.awm.gov.au/articles/blog/anzac-biscuits.

Most ANZAC biscuits recipes are quite similar. I followed this one: Taste.com.au – ANZAC recipe

Activities for the day

On the day itself, I plan to be catching up with friends both in the morning and afternoon. Others go to the pub to watch the traditional ANZAC Day ALF game or they may attend various dawn servers. There are many activities occurring throughout the day. In some areas, ROTARY clubs may also put on events, so it’s worth checking out local websites or facebook pages.

ANZAC Day is truly special. It’s a time to reflect and show some respect to those who have sacrificed their lives so that we can stay safe. It doesn’t matter what you do on the day, just put at least a few minutes aside to think about the amazing work the men and women have done to ensure our freedom and safety
