After a long break since my last use, I have finally had the chance to use my first ILNP love, the Magician.
The Magician
Not only was the Magician my first ILNP purchase it was also one of my first true toppers. I have used glitters, topcoats and other similar products but nothing like the Magician. The way it catches the light and completely transforms a basic colour is truly amazing and resulted in me purchasing additional toppers over the past year.
So far I have used this topper on black, so I was keen to try it out in different colours. This time trying it out on Essie polish ‘strut your stuff’. Strut your stuff is a beautiful blue that is amazing on its own but I wanted to add some extra depth without having to completely create a new design. So I decided to add the Magician.
In some lights, it looks as if I don’t have the topper on. Other times I see the shimmer and sparkle of this polish. This feature is what makes this style of topper unique. It creates a diverse mani without having to put too much effort to create a unique design. It also can greatly change the way a polish or design looks. I love being able to change my design mid-week without having to start from scratch.
What colours does the Magician work on?
So as I was writing this post, I wondered what other colours would work or not work with the Magician. So out came my swatching wheel for some experiments. I selected a wide range of colours and tried to pick colours that I typically wouldn’t wear including pink and yellow. I also selected a few different brands just to vary the experiment a little more.
The colours I tested include:
- Australis – Sweet Caroline
- Australis – Blue Collar Babe
- Nails Inc – Belgrave Place
- Nails Inc – Queen Victoria Street
- Nails Inc – Notting Hill Carnival
- Oxx – Raspberry Scented
- OPI – Alpine Snow (btw this is my favourite white polish)
- OPI – Polly Want a Lacquer
- OPI – Got the Blues for Red
- Essie – Aruba Blue
(note: the numbers above match whats on the swatch wheel)
Each colour had at least two coats applied. However Aruba blue and Raspberry Scented both needed a third coat. This isn’t generally the fault of the polish rather it just has trouble going onto the plastic. When I have worn both of these polishes on my nails they only required two coats.
After allowing the colours to dry I applied a single coat of the Magician. Generally, one coat is enough to see the effects and I didn’t want to use up too much for this experiment.
Overall it was interesting to see that the Magician worked best on darker colours including, Belgrave Place (3), Got the Blues for Red (9) and Aruba Blue (10). For the lighter colours, it was difficult to tell that a topper had been applied.
Overall
Overall I am very much still in love with the Magician as well as other ILNP products. It was interesting to see the effect it has on each polish and I’m now quite curious about my other toppers. I’m sure the Magician will pop up in future Instagram posts very soon!
I love how The Magician changes over different colors! Thanks for including your experiment in there too!
nw it was great fun!
