After an early breaky and morning walk around Melbourne city we headed to Om Nom kitchen located within the Adelphi Hotel. We booked in for a 12pm high tea. After my last high tea experience in Sydney, I was expecting something quite a similar.
The Atmosphere
As you step into the entryway, it has a bit of a standard hotel restaurant feel. However, the metal horse adds to the decor.
The restaurant itself is really nicely decorated. With 6 of us, we were placed on a long table that includes a swing seat! My friend and I both jumped in to use the swing. Unfortunately, the wall was directly behind the seat meaning that we couldn’t swing far (although that didn’t stop us trying). The lighting was quite dark and relaxed. Additionally, the soothing music in the background created a really nice place to dine.
We had the option of selecting a sparkling wine, champaign or unlimited champaign. I was tempted by the free-flowing however the whole table needed to join in and not everyone drinks. So we went with the sparkling wine option. If you weren’t interested in drinking you could also select a mocktail.
High Tea
I had entered expecting to select the sparkling wine, however, after hearing the mocktail options I had to try one. After selecting the initial drinks we were then left to select a tea. It was great to know that we didn’t have to stick with a single tea throughout the dining experience. I ended up trying 3 teas, an English breakfast, chai and vanilla flavoured. I was amazed by the vanilla flavoured as it didn’t have a bitter aftertaste like other vanilla flavoured teas I have tried. Each tea had its own characteristics and I had heaps of fun exploring what was on offer.
The savoury dishes arrived shortly after our first tea selection. Instead of the normal sandwiches, we were provided with softshell crab burgers. However, two of the group didn’t eat crab and so I swapped two of my savoury items. I do wish they checked to see if the crab items would be ok at the beginning of the service. Or check if there was anything that our group wouldn’t eat particularly when it comes to seafood items. However, I did thoroughly enjoy the softshell crab burgers.
After finishing the savoury items we headed into the deserts. Small little truffles were placed in beautiful tea cups held by cookie ‘dirt’. I was the first to try the cookie dirt and found it very sweet but a lot of fun to eat. Each dessert was very sweet and so this part of the meal took us the longest to complete. However, trying each tea in between the sweets gave our pallets a rest.
Overall
I loved this high tea experience. It was unique and I loved the twist in the traditional high tea. However, I do wish a few things were different. The inclusion of at least 1 traditional sandwich would have added a nice balance to the very rich food. Additionally, I wished they checked for other dietary requirements before we started the meal. For a high tea experience, I prefer the atmosphere in the QVB as it felt like a high tea should. Despite these criticisms, I still had an amazing time and loved the sweets on offer.
