I’m still a little surprised that St Patrick’s day is only a week away, especially because only last week I referred to it being 2018. When I see St Patrick’s Day Nail Art, it generally is a solid colour. So to change it up a bit I thought I would do an ombre. Originally when I thought up the ombre combo I had spring in mind, which this base would have also worked with. Without any more of my rambling, let’s get on with the St Patrick’s Day Nail Art Tutorial.
St Patrick’s Day Nail Art Tutorial
You will need:
- White and green nail polish
- Latex barrier or sticky tape
- A base and top coat
- Cheap make-up sponge (ie one from the $2 shop)
- Either decals or stamping plates and accessories
As with all ombre designs, I start out with a base colour, typically the lightest colour of the ombre. In this case, it’s white. Not everyone does this but I find it helps to get the effect that I’m after.
Having let this dry I apply my latex barrier around the nail. Ombre can be quite a messy design and this means I can clean about in about 30 seconds instead of 30minutes. If you don’t have a latex barrier, a sticky tape can work just as well. It might just leave a few spots that need to be tidied. If you’re applying the latex barrier I also recommend doing one hand at a time because it will stick to everything including nail polish brushes.
Grabbing your sponge, begin to apply stripes of green and white onto the sponge try to have one spot that overlaps. For the first round, you might need to do this twice before putting the sponge on your nail.
When ready quickly dab the sponge on your nail ensuring that the sponge is wet. If it dries out too much it will pick up the already applied polish. Before applying a second coat from the sponge, make sure the nail has fully dried, otherwise, this too will remove the already applied polish.
Continue applying until you are happy with the result. It doesn’t have to be perfect as the top coat will smooth out the design.
When the ombre is dry apply your top coat. You can either leave it here or move onto the next steps.
St Patrick’s Day Nail Art Tutorial – Part 2
There are a few options available to add some detail to your design. One easy way is the use of nail stickers or decals. For this method follow the instructions on the pack and apply it to your nails. Add at least two top coats to ensure the stickers don’t fall off.
You could also freehand some St Patrick’s designs onto your nails. My freehand work is pretty shocking so I decided to do some nail stamping.
As I don’t have a St Patrick’s Day stamping plate I create some four-leaf clovers using a love heart as its the same shape as each leaf. I used a darker green so that it would stand out from the rest of the nail.
This second part is completely up to you and what your preferences are. I would love to see your designs, so if you do give this a go, tag me in (@theNailChronicle).
Overall
I had great fun creating this design. If you give it a go I would love for you to tag me in your pics!
