I loooovee an ombre. It’s one of my favourite nail art techniques. It can look absolutely gorgeous and if it doesn’t quite work some nail stickers or nail stamping can easily hide it. Traditionally I’ve only created a vertical ombre down my nail, so when I heard about a horizontal ombre across the hand I had to give this a go. After choosing my favourite colour for the theme I set out to create a blue ombre nail art design.
Blue Ombre
I used the same technique as other ombre designs by painting each nail with the lightest colour. I only applied one coat as the other colours would be adding additional layers, with the exception of my pinky finger where I applied two coats. I started the dark colours from my thumb working my way down. Before starting I applied some latex barrier to stop the polish getting all over my fingers. Marking tape can also assist, it won’t work as well but will reduce the amount of clean up needed significantly.
Using a sponge that I got from the $2 shop I applied a few layers of polish to the sponge and gently dabbed it on. By swapping between both hands I was able to ensure that each layer had dried fully before applying the next. The other key tip is to ensure the polish on the sponge is wet and hasn’t started drying. If it is slightly dry it can lift the polish from your nail which is rather frustrating.
After your happy with your colours, apply a few coats of top coat. Don’t worry too much if it isn’t neat as the top coat will generally smooth it out.
Overall
While the ombre on the thumb and first finger, the lighter shades of colour for the remaining fingers were too similar to the base colour meaning the ombre was almost impossible to spot despite testing the colours out on some paper first. I didn’t have time to redo this but will try this out again, maybe with a different colour base. However, I still had fun creating the blue ombre nail art and learnt a lot about the colours I used.
