Ombre is one of my favourite nail art techniques. It looks so pretty however it can get messy, especially if you don’t have a latex barrier. Normally I will create my ombre’s down the nail but I wanted to share a different way of creating an ombre that wouldn’t create so much mess. This technique spreads the ombre across the nails rather than down each nail. For this easy blue ombre, you will need 5 different shades of blue that work well together. However other colours could be used. For example, you could use green or red/pink. If you can paint your nails then you can do this ombre technique.
Easy Blue Ombre
Start out with applying any base coat and allowing it to fully dry.
Grab 5 shades of the same colour, lining them up from darkest to lightest. I recommend doing a test on some paper or a practice wheel if you have one to check that the colours work well together and that they’re not too similar.
The blue shades that I selected in order of dark to light are:
-
- Colour Show: Broadway Blues
- Essie: Hide and go chic
- OPI: Rich Girls and Po Boys
- David Jones – no name
- Australis Nail Colour: Blue Colar Babe
I applied the colours starting from my thumb with the darkest shade to my pinky with the lightest blue shade. For each nail, I added two coats for full opacity and to ensure it would last the full week. Make sure that you keep your polishes in order so that you don’t accidentally apply the incorrect shade to the wrong nail (yes I nearly did this).
Once happy with this I added a topcoat. You could also add some stickers, nail stamping or a glitter topcoat to the ombre.
Overall
This easy blue ombre was great fun to do, with very little clean up. In terms of clean up, the worst part was the number of polishes that I had out. If you’re messy like me, an eye shadow brush dipped in non-acetone nail polish remover can make removing polish from around the nail really easy.
