Ona Coffee – Marrickville

Ona Coffee - Marrickville

Every time I travel to Canberra I have to visit Ona Coffee for breakfast. Not only do they have amazing Breaky rolls, they also have fantastic coffee. When I heard they were going to open in Sydney I was incredibly excited! They opened up in Marrickville which despite the closeness to the CBD I haven’t travelled to the area yet. So we travelled over to have a special brunch in celebration of my partner’s bday.

Ona Coffee

We started with coffee. Being presented with two menu’s we had endless options. With the help of the waiter, the choices were narrowed down and the menus didn’t seem so overwhelming. We selected a coffee each. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the names or find a menu online. I loved the way it was served in a unique cup specifically designed for each blend. Both my partner and I tried a little bit of each other. Personally, I prefer my own choice but like wine, coffee can be very subjective.

Food

I was hoping that the bacon and egg roll available in Canberra would also be available at the Ona Marrickville location. However the menu is quite different, so at least in a way, it made me try something new. After waiting for ages one of the baristas was able to grab the waiter for us.

I selected the Avocado, Charcoal Lebnah, Togorashi with Rye. I added some prosciutto for a little more protein. It arrived beautifully presented. The ingredients were spread in even thirds on the Rye bread, with the prosciutto on the side.

The only thing was I had no idea what the green stuff was. I began constructing my meal. Spreading what I’m guessing was the Togorashi over the bread first. This had a sort of cream cheese flavour but not as strong. I then smooshed the avo all over, followed by the prosciutto and egg. The flavour combo was amazing. I love the Togarashi. It added such a nice balance to the strong flavours. I was really glad that I added the prosciutto as it added some saltiness that was definitely needed for the dish.

My partner selected the Bacon Toastie with pickled green tomato, gruyere and relish. He had requested for the tomato to be removed. However, as they are pre-prepared this wasn’t able to be accommodated. Despite this he went with this selection. Worst case he could pull out the tomato as he has done many times in the past. As he ate the toastie he barely noticed the tomato as the other flavours counteracted it so well. It sounded like a very well balanced toastie.

Ona Coffee – Round Two

When selecting my first Ona coffee I was strongly leaning towards the Raspberry Candy blend, served in a latte style. So I decided to get this on the way out seeing as its a bit of a drive back to my place. My partner also got a second coffee, opting for the founder blend. When paying for our coffee we spied something delicious for afternoon tea. Some amazing looking doughnuts from Short Stop. I have no idea what the flavours were as there were no labels. However, both tasted amazing!! The green one pictured below on the right can only be described as a green fairy the doughnut flavour was so delicate and the perfect end to our experience.

Overall 4/5

Overall I love the experience! However, a few aspects need some work. It would seem 1 more waiter is needed on weekends at least as the guy seemed to be very busy at times. Other than that it was a great experience!
