Just a few short hours away from the hustle and bustle of Sydney is the beautiful Blue Mountains area. The reason I say “area” is that the Blue Mountains is quite large and not just restricted to the main tourist town of Katoomba. There is so much to explore throughout the region. If you don’t have access to a car or just felt like taking the train there, then Katoomba and Wentworth Falls are the easier places to check out. However, at some point, I do recommend jumping in a car so that you can explore other areas. The other advantage of having access to a car is that you can visit areas where that are less populated. Personally, I enjoy exploring areas with fewer people as you can take things slowly and not feel so rushed.
My partner I and woke early to fill the car and ourselves. Most of our road trips begin with coffee!! We headed out of the city towards the Valley of the Waters which took about 1.5 hours to reach. We arrived just a few minutes before our friends and not realising how cold it would be, we decided to wait in the car. With everyone rugged up and carrying plenty of water, we headed out on the trail. If you are planning a bushwalk, make sure you have plenty of water especially in summer.
The Walk
The trails around the mountains have varying difficulties, we decided to select a medium one. This involved many stairs including some quite steep parts, but it wasn’t too hard. Overall the track took around 3 hours. However, this was slightly longer as we did take a wrong turn at one point. We weren’t too worried when this happened as we were able to easily return to the fork in the path and return back to the loop. This is why plenty of water should always be carried.
The scenery was stunning, well worth the three-hour walk.
Lunch
We well and truly needed some lunch after our extra long walk and headed to a place within the botanical gardens which was unfortunately fully booked so we moved onto a small local cafe. The service was friendly and the food was delicious! Unfortunately, I can’t quite remember the name or exact location.
After lunch, we had a quick wander around the street to check out the awesome cars before heading home.
A Magical Place
The blue mountains is truly a magical place, there is so much to explore even if you don’t have a car. There are trails to suit everyone. Make sure you take enough water with you and dress to the weather. It can be far colder than Sydney in winter so dress warmly.
