Sydney Metro Train – Driverless Train

Sydney Metro Driveless Train

About a month ago the Sydney Metro opened. It’s Sydney’s first driverless train that has opened up Sydney’s hills suburbs. So my partner and I decided to jump on board and see where we would end up.

We started the metro journey from Epping, with the aim of going to the end of the line at Tallowang station. We jumped onto the first carriage so that we could see out onto the track. It’s so strange to be able to see the track as your moving forward. I also found it so odd to be on a driverless train.

We had a fellow passenger provide us with some awesome facts about the train which was pretty cool. Along the track is a bunch of sensors to help the driving of the train.  As we travelled through the tunnel it felt like we were flying so quickly, as it turns out we were travelling at 80km/h. Eventually, we reached the end of the tunnel and with the tracks being above the ground we had a full view of the area.  Given that it was our first time in the area it was a great way to see it. For this open area, apparently, the train was travelling at 100km/h but it didn’t feel like it. I think the confines of the tunnel made it feel that we were going so much faster the 80km/h.

Having reached the end of the line Tallowang Station, we sat on the train waiting for it to turn back the other way. We jumped off at Castle Hill station, as I was curious about the suburb and wanted to see what Castle Towers Shopping Centre was all about.

When we reached Castle Hill, the station still has that new vibe. We came across a tunnel that seems to head towards the shopping centre however it wasn’t open so I’m guessing that area isn’t quite finished. However, the walk to the shopping centre was quite short so not having the tunnel there wasn’t a big deal and it was a nice chance to explore the suburb.

This shopping centre is huge. It has three levels and filled with such a great variety of stores. The centre was a little overwhelming at first. However, once we got the hang of navigating around it wasn’t too hard to find where we wanted to go.

Overall

Riding the Sydney Metro surprisingly fun! It was awesome to be sitting at the front of the train and see the tracks fly past. If you haven’t taken the Metro yet, I really recommend sitting at the front of the train. It was great to check out another part of Sydney that I haven’t seen before. I’m looking forward to exploring more of the hills area.
