Scary Clown Nail Art – Halloween 2019 – Design 1

Scary Clown Halloween Nail Art

This scary clown nail art design started with the plate selection. If you have read some of my other posts, you may have seen that I am trying to use each plate in my collection at least once. I’ve mostly got Halloween plates left, so I might try a design with two different plates in the near future. For my scary clown design, I selected Maniology plate – BM-S244 a small square plate. I was a little stumped what to do, so I headed over to google for some ideas. A design by D4zzling Me inspired this design a little, especially the base colour that I was most struggling with. I knew that I wanted to do some reverse stamping but was concerned that the colours would be hidden from the base. Seeing a design with a light base colour gave me a lot more confidence that what I was planning would work.

The Base

I wanted a slight off white base and the closest colour I have to this is Sally Hansen – Shell We Dance. The colour has a bit of peach in it without overpowering the nail, its quite a nice nude base.

I know that this colour has very low opacity and will take a lot of coats to become opaque. Additionally, it takes a really long time to try. Patience with this colour is key. When you think it’s dry wait a little longer. Luckily I was at home for most of the day, so I don’t have to rush.  Three coats later and a long time waiting I called it done. If I didn’t apply the stamping on top it would likely need a 4th or 5th coat.

Scary Clown Nail Art – Reverse Stamping

For my scary clowns I used quite a few colours:

  • Colour Show – Coral Craze – pink/Orange
  • OPI – Rich Girls and Po Boys – Blue
  • Face of Australia – Cool Coton – White
  • OPI – Tell me about it stud – Red
  • Nails Inc – Notting Hill Carnival
  • Konad – Black – Used for the outline
  • OPI – The IT color- Orange

I stamped the image outlines onto my stamping mat and also stamped two images on each hand. I also used plain images to balance out the scary clowns.

The next step was to fill in the colours. I used bright colours for the hair and accessories. I then used white for the face to try an emulate the classic white paint that clowns applied. As some of the colours were applied quite thickly I left the decals to dry for a while before adding a clear topcoat.

I broke my rule of making extra decals on this design as I was running low on the black and having trouble getting clear images at times. So I took extra care to ensure that the decals had dried before lifting them off with tweezers and carefully applying them to my nails. I wanted to get the placement fairly straight.

I then added one last topcoat to complete the design.

Overall

I’m so happy with how this scary clown nail art turned out. They looked super cool and are one of my favourite Halloween designs. I will be doing at least one more Halloween nail art design for this year. For some other ideas check out last year’s series:
