Day Trip to Berry in NSW – Day Trip from Sydney

So like many of my travel and food posts recently I am majorly behind. This day trip to Berry in NSW actually happened around the first week of January. NSW had started to open up after what should have been another full covid lockdown (at least for some Sydney areas) so we jumped in the car and took advantage of being able to get out of the city for the day.

The Drive

We actually attempted this trip twice. The first time was on boxing day. The traffic was so bad that I would have taken 4 hours to get there instead of 2!! After two hours of driving, we had only reached the Wollongong area, so we found a pie for lunch and turned around back home.

The second attempt on new years eve was much better. It only took the expected 2 hours which is reasonable for a day trip. The drive to get to Berry is pretty easy and enjoyable with highways all the way down. The town itself is really easy to navigate. Limited parking on the main street means that you may need to park in one of the back streets. Most places are within walking distance of each other so don’t worry about being parked too far away.

Day Trip to Berry in NSW – A Foodie Adventure

I wanted to go on a little bush walk around the area, however, my partner had injured his toe preventing him from wearing closed-in shoes. It was also a little painful to walk so we decided to turn this into a foodie trip as there are some really popular places down in Berry.

Highly recommended online is Milkwood Bakery, so we started our foodie journey here with a pie and coffee. We found a cute park at the end of the main street to eat our pies.

Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to expectations. Compared to other pies in the region this one was pretty average. The coffee wasn’t great either. I wouldn’t recommend Milkwood if you’re looking for a good pie.

Moving on we headed to the famous Donut Van which is a short stroll down the street. The long line stretched down the street but moved pretty quickly. We ordered one regular donut and a donut and cream. The donut and cream turned was just a donut on top of ice-cream which was ok but I actually preferred the plain donut. The donuts were fresh and really tasty! They were exactly what you want from a cinnamon donut. The melting ice cream melting meant that I wasn’t able to get a picture of the donut.

Coffee Attempt 2 in Berry

We continued back toward the main area of the town to explore other shops on the street. We came across a small coffee shop called IV coffee serving our favourite Ona blend. After the disappointing coffee from the Bakery, I was really looking forward to a decent cup. Sadly this one really didn’t hit the mark either. The milk was overheated and didn’t taste that great. I’m not sure what the barista did as I’ve had that blend before and never had it taste so bad. Still, we made the best of it and took out coffee towards the back of town where there was a nice walking path.

We continued on down the street to try out a butcher. I always carry cooler bags in my car for this very reason. We selected 2 different types of sausages as we had a bbq coming up. The snags were amazing. There wasn’t too much oil or grease pouring out. They were plump and full of flavour. The sausages are up there with some of the best I ever had. I would even consider just driving down to Berry for the meat and donut.

Overall

This was a great trip to get out of Sydney for a bit even with some of the disappointing coffee. Personally, I would recommend just skipping the coffee (unless your desperate) and heading straight for the Butcher and donut! A day trip to Berry NSW is a great way to spend a day!

Let me know if you have any recommendations for Berry!
