Food Scene in Bridgetown | South West WA Roadtrip – Part 2

Barking Cow Cafe - Waffles of the day

Throughout our trip, we had so many opportunities to try out the local food scene in Bridgetown. From lolly shops to the classic pub meal there were so many options that had us covered for the weekend. If you haven’t already take a look at part one of this trip.

Before heading down south, I requested some recommendations of where to eat in the Perth Foodies Facebook group. While I wasn’t able to check out every spot it gave me a good head start. If you’re visiting on a weekend, I strongly recommend making a booking as we really struggled to find a spot to eat that wasn’t fully booked.

Dinner

On our first night after trying out a few places, we ended heading to the Bridgetown Hotel, one of the local pubs. It wasn’t our first choice but everything was fully booked (hint – plan ahead if your visiting). The service was really odd, with different people performing a single function. After reviewing the menu for quite a while we chose and asked the person who seated us if we could order. She informed us that someone else would have to take our order. When we ordered our food, we requested to order some drinks only to be informed that someone else had to take the drink orders. This seemed so inefficient and disjointed. We both decided to get a steak, with vegetables and mushroom sauce. The veggies were great and the star of the dish. However the meat was overdone, we asked for medium and got more of a well-done steak. The mushroom sauce was lacking in something. For a pub meal, I wasn’t expecting much but for the cost, I would have expected something much better. We decided to just eat it anyway and call it a night.

The second night we tried the Freemasons Pub. The service was great and the staff were super friendly! After a few minutes, we ordered a Chicken Parmigiana and a drink each! The meals were delicious, I only wished we had enough room for dessert. Out of the two I would recommend Freemasons over the Bridgetown Hotel.

Breakfast

The Mulberry Tree was our first stop for breaky!! The cute and cosy cafe was super popular and really friendly. While they were busy they still provided really good service. I ordered a breaky burger which came with a really cool hash brown done in a completely different style. My partner grabbed some toast with a few sides to sort of creating his own breaky! The coffee was really good as well!

For our last morning, we headed to Barking Cow Cafe. The place was pretty full but we managed to grab a table outside which was great as we were about to spend 3 hours in a car heading home. Plus I wanted to enjoy the sunshine while we were able to as a massive storm was due to hit in the arvo!! I ordered the pancake special and my partner got the big breaky so that we could share 1/2 each! The food was amazing and the coffee was fantastic. I almost grabbed a second coffee! I’m so glad this place was recommended to me.

The Cidery – Bridgetown Food Scene

We received multiple recommendations to check out the cidery, so on the last day, we made a point of checking it out! We wanted to leave early due to the impending storm, so we headed there as soon as they opened at 11 am. Unfortunately, they don’t start servicing lunch until 12 pm. So we tried out a few drinks before grabbing a sparkling apple juice and sitting next to the fire just relaxing and contemplating what we would have for lunch. I selected a vegetable soup and my partner grabbed the cottage pie! The food was delicious and worth delaying heading back to Perth.

Headed Home

The trek back home was tough as it was raining very heavily! We just took it slowly. The worst part was when we got past Mandurah as we entered Perth due to the increased number of on-ramps onto the freeway.

It was a great spot for a weekend away where we could just relax and take it easy! I highly recommend visiting and exploring the Bridgetown food scene!

  1. Tasty foods but think most would kill me haha! Is it easy to get dairy free options over there? Over here in Scotland there are plenty vegan options and other diet needs are catered for too.

    1. It depends. Sometimes its really easy. I generally have more issues in smaller towns but its slowly changing to have more options
