Mjolner Sydney | Viking Bar Review

Mjolner - Gravlax

In celebration of our 8th anniversary, we were looking for somewhere nice to go. Its become a bit of a tradition to go out somewhere special for our anniversary as you might have seen in last years post for 360 Bar and Dining. Following our trip to Melbourne where we had visited the bar section of Mjolner, our friend suggested that we go to Mjolner Sydney (Mjolner Melbourne also has both the restaurant and bar). I made the booking online, which after a few plan changes was easy to update.

Mjolner Sydney

Thor was the inspiration behind Mjolner’s creation. The establishment features Viking themed furnishing and decoration that create such a cool atmosphere. Both the restaurant and bar menu feature dishes centred around the theme of Thor featuring other Germanic gods.

We started our night with a complimentary drink, unfortunately, I didn’t quite catch the name but it was delicious. Both my partner and I didn’t click that the drink was meant to be drunk like a shot. So we were slowly sipping while the waiter patiently waited until he let us know it was a shot! Ops! The welcome drink was a nice way to start the evening.

Mjolner’s Drinks

Mjolner Sydney has a wide range of cocktails, beers and whiskies. I ordered the Blazing Glögg whilst my partner ordered meed in a horn. The blazing Glögg was delivered with a show. The drink arrived in a small metal pot. The waiter began to heat the drink with a blow torch, heating until it was able to be lit on fire. The liquid was then transferred from pot to pot whilst still on fire!! It was an amazing sight to see. After a few rounds, the flame was put out and the drink was poured into a small glass-topped with some delicious fruit on a stick. The drink was warm and comforting. It had such a beautiful delicate flavour.

The meed in the horn was just as delicious. I’m really glad they told my partner to drink from the side of the horn as we had to work this out ourselves during our Melbourne trip.

As we finished our drinks, reach towards the end of our meal we decided to get another drink to share. We ordered Northen Lights a bright green cocktail that had a touch of sweetness. The drink was delicious and a refreshing way to end the meal.

Entree

Before we started our meals, we had a very important task to select our weapon aka steak knife. The waiter brought out a wide selection of knives to choose from.

To begin our feast, we each ordered an entree. I ordered the Gravlex which was smoked salmon with radish and sour cream. I have to admit I googled what Gravlex was as I was too embarrassed to ask, although I know. Each element worked beautifully together. I especially loved the touch of radish which provided a nice break from the strong salmon and cream flavours.

My partner ordered the roast bone marrow. When ordering this dish, he was offered to have it heated with a blow torch and then have a shot of whisky poured down the bone once he had finished eating the entree. Of course, my partner said yes to this! The bone marrow was delicious, served on top of toast it was such a great dish well-fitting to the venue.

One of the bones was selected for the pouring which was heated until it caramelised slightly. Once it cooled for a moment the shot was poured down the bone straight into my partner’s mouth. His facial expressions were so funny. I don’t think he was quite expecting it but he enjoyed it quite a bit.

Main and Dessert

For the main, we ordered the feature, a half duck that was designed to be shared. The dish arrived with large pieces of duck on the bone that was covered in a delicious slightly sour sauce.  It was hard to elegantly get the duck off the bone at times but given the atmosphere was quite relaxed I didn’t feel too self-conscious once I remembered this.

Mjolner - Roast Duck

We also ordered roast potatoes that arrived with a similar cream to what was used in the Gravlex dish. The potatoes were tender and worked so well with the cream.

Mjolner - Poached Pear Dessert

For dessert, I ordered the poached pear which arrived in the middle of a delicious fruity sauce. My partner ordered the bone marrow Brulee. I nearly ordered this myself, however, I’m glad my partner steered me away from this as it was nice but not quite to my flavour preference.

Overall 5/5

Viking Spoon

I loved the theatrical experience of Mjolner. From the awesome introduction from the hostess to selecting our weapon, from the moment we began our feast the scene was set. All of the dishes were amazing and the drinks were delicious. I highly recommend visiting Mjolner.
